Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the state government has forwarded alleged evidence related to purported Pakistan links involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi to the Central government for further investigation.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters in Mirzapur, Sarma stated that the Assam government had transferred the case along with supporting materials, as the matter goes beyond the jurisdiction of the state police. He added that the Centre would now conduct a detailed probe. According to the Chief Minister, the issue has potential implications for national security.<\/p>\n
The development comes amid an ongoing political controversy in Assam, with Sarma repeatedly accusing Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn, of having connections with individuals based in Pakistan. The Chief Minister earlier announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Assam government to look into the allegations.<\/p>\n
Sarma claimed that the SIT\u2019s inquiry unearthed aspects requiring investigation at the national level, including elements that may involve international coordination. He has alleged that Gogoi had visited Pakistan on an invitation from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and that his wife had professional links with a Pakistani firm. The Chief Minister also named Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, alleging that he had associations with the Gogoi family and had made statements critical of India.<\/p>\n
Citing the sensitive nature of the material collected during the probe, Sarma said the case was referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs for a comprehensive investigation. In February 2026, he further claimed that Gogoi\u2019s son had given up Indian citizenship, linking it to the wider controversy.<\/p>\n
Gaurav Gogoi, however, has firmly denied all allegations. He described the claims as baseless and accused the Chief Minister of attempting to create a controversy for political reasons.
