Guwahati Police has cracked a land-registration fraud case and arrested four accused from Sonitpur district in connection with cheating a senior citizen by impersonating government officials.<\/p>\n
According to a post shared by Guwahati Police on X, an EGPD team from Sonapur Police Station launched an investigation after a 70-year-old resident of Kachutoli reported being duped in the name of land registration work.<\/p>\n
Police said the victim was approached by a fraudster posing as an employee of the Sonapur Circle Office. The accused allegedly convinced the elderly man that he could facilitate official land-registration procedures and gradually collected \u20b917,260 from him over the course of nearly a month.<\/p>\n
However, suspicion arose after the accused suddenly became unreachable. The victim later visited the Circle Office and discovered that no such employee existed there. Realising that he had fallen prey to a scam, he approached the police and lodged a complaint.<\/p>\n
Acting on the complaint, the EGPD team of Sonapur Police Station initiated a swift investigation. Using technical surveillance and other investigative inputs, police traced the accused persons to Tezpur in Sonitpur district.<\/p>\n
During the operation, police apprehended four individuals identified as:<\/strong><\/p>\n Police believe the group was involved in impersonation and fraudulent collection of money by exploiting people seeking assistance in government-related land procedures.<\/p>\n The accused have been brought under legal proceedings, and further investigation is underway to determine whether the gang was involved in similar scams targeting other residents.<\/p>\n The latest crackdown highlights the growing concern over fraudsters impersonating government officials to exploit unsuspecting citizens, particularly senior residents.
