In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, the Guwahati Police arrested two alleged wildlife smugglers and rescued 26 live Gecko lizards during an operation conducted by the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD).<\/p>\n
According to a post shared by Guwahati Police on X, a team from Gorchuk Police Station apprehended Md Ikramul Hussain of Kochua and Md Jamiruddin of Tarabari for illegally transporting the reptiles.<\/p>\n
Police officials said the accused were caught carrying 26 live Gecko lizards concealed inside bamboo tubes, which were allegedly used to transport the animals secretly to avoid detection. The rescued Geckos were recovered safely during the operation.<\/p>\n
The police have initiated legal action against both accused under relevant provisions of wildlife protection laws. Authorities are also investigating the possible involvement of a larger wildlife smuggling network operating in Assam and neighboring states.<\/p>\n
Gecko lizards are highly protected species and are often targeted by illegal wildlife traffickers due to myths surrounding their medicinal and commercial value in black markets across parts of Asia. Wildlife experts and enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned that such illegal trade poses a serious threat to biodiversity and ecological balance.<\/p>\n
Assam has witnessed several incidents of wildlife smuggling in recent years, including illegal transportation of rare reptiles, exotic birds, and animal body parts. Law enforcement agencies, along with forest officials, have intensified surveillance and intelligence-based operations to curb organized wildlife crime in the region.<\/p>\n
Officials stated that the rescued Geckos would be handed over to the concerned wildlife and forest authorities for proper care and further procedures.<\/p>\n
