Guwahati, June 30: Assam Education and Information Technology Minister Ranoj Pegu on Monday inaugurated the Summer Internship Programme 2026 at Gauhati University, describing it as a significant step towards equipping students with industry-relevant skills in cutting-edge technologies.<\/p>\n
The month-long internship programme, organised by the university’s Department of Information Technology, was inaugurated in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma, Dean of Technology Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma, faculty members and university officials.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Pegu said the Assam Government remains committed to creating a strong ecosystem for Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence education in the state. He encouraged students to embrace emerging technologies and develop future-ready digital skills that will enhance their employability and contribute to the state’s growing technology sector.<\/p>\n
The Summer Internship Programme 2026 has brought together nearly 300 undergraduate students, including 280 registered participants from Assam, other Northeastern states and different parts of the country, making it the largest undergraduate internship initiative ever organised by Gauhati University under its IT Department.<\/p>\n
Participants will undergo intensive hands-on training in 11 specialised domains, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Generative AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Cyber Security, Computer Vision, Data Science, Multimedia, Visual Effects (VFX), AI for Cognition, Computer Hardware and Networking, as well as Health Informatics.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta highlighted the university’s commitment to integrating emerging technologies with academic excellence and promoting innovation-driven education. He noted that such initiatives help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry requirements.<\/p>\n
Head of the Department of Information Technology, Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma, said the internship programme aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises experiential learning and internships as an essential component of undergraduate education.<\/p>\n
According to the organisers, the internship programme will continue until July 28, 2026, with students receiving practical training in departmental laboratories under the guidance of experienced faculty members. The initiative aims to provide participants with exposure to advanced technologies, research methodologies and real-world problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n
