Guwahati (Assam)<\/strong>: In a major policy decision aimed at promoting cleaner energy and reducing the cost of natural gas for consumers, the Assam Government has reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Piped Natural Gas (PNG) from 14.5% to 5%. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through a post on X on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Sharing the decision, the Chief Minister said the reduced tax rate is intended to accelerate the adoption of cleaner fuel across the state while making PNG more affordable for households, businesses, and industries.<\/p>\n

According to the Chief Minister, the VAT reduction is expected to improve affordability for consumers, enhance the financial viability of PNG suppliers, support industrial growth, and strengthen Assam’s efforts towards achieving greater energy self-reliance.<\/p>\n

The decision forms part of the Assam Budget 2026\u201327 and marks a significant reduction of 9.5 percentage points in the VAT levied on Piped Natural Gas. Industry observers believe the move could encourage wider use of PNG by lowering operating costs for commercial establishments and industries while making the fuel more accessible for domestic consumers.<\/p>\n

Piped Natural Gas is considered a cleaner alternative to conventional fuels and has been increasingly promoted for residential, commercial, and industrial use due to its lower emissions and convenient supply through dedicated pipeline networks. The tax cut is expected to further support the expansion of PNG infrastructure and encourage more consumers to switch to cleaner energy sources.<\/p>\n

A promotional graphic released alongside the announcement highlighted the reduction in VAT from 14.5% to 5% and outlined the expected benefits of the measure, including improved affordability for customers, better viability for suppliers, and increased adaptability of PNG across industrial sectors.<\/p>\n

The latest decision reflects the Assam Government’s broader focus on expanding clean energy usage while supporting economic growth through lower energy costs. Officials expect the revised VAT rate to encourage greater adoption of Piped Natural Gas across the state and contribute to a more sustainable and efficient energy ecosystem.<\/p>\n
