New Delhi<\/strong>: A prolonged hunger strike by activist Sonam Wangchuk entered a new phase on Saturday after he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital from the Jantar Mantar protest site, where he had been fasting for 21 days. Delhi Police said the decision was taken on medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.<\/p>\n

Wangchuk has been spearheading a campaign along with members of CJP, seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination paper leak case. His deteriorating health had become a matter of concern during the ongoing protest.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily health assessments of the activist, observing that the protection of life must remain a priority. The court instructed officials to ensure continuous medical supervision and provide treatment whenever necessary.<\/p>\n

Acting on those directions, police personnel reached the protest venue on Saturday and shifted Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital. Officials said the move was intended solely to ensure that he received timely medical care following the prolonged fast.<\/p>\n

The transfer sparked strong reactions from the protest organisers. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke was briefly detained during the police operation and later released. In a post on X, Dipke alleged that he was assaulted while in custody, an allegation that has not been independently verified.<\/p>\n

After his release, Dipke addressed supporters and said the campaign would continue despite Wangchuk’s hospitalisation. He announced that demonstrators would remain at Jantar Mantar and proceed with a planned march to Parliament on July 20, accusing the authorities of attempting to disrupt a peaceful movement.<\/p>\n

Other members of the organisation also criticised the police action. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das alleged that students gathered at the protest site were subjected to a lathi charge during the operation. Another spokesperson, Ashutosh Ranka, claimed that roads leading to Jantar Mantar had been sealed, making it difficult for supporters to reach the venue. He appealed to people across the country to hold peaceful demonstrations in solidarity with the protest.<\/p>\n

In a statement shared on X, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, said Wangchuk’s transfer to Safdarjung Hospital was carried out on the recommendation of medical experts and in accordance with the High Court’s directions. Police maintained that the action was taken exclusively in the interest of safeguarding his health.<\/p>\n

While Wangchuk remains under medical observation, organisers have reiterated that the agitation over the NEET-UG controversy will continue.
