Guwahati, July 23<\/strong>: The Assam Government has stepped up rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts as the state’s flood emergency continues to worsen, with more than 9 lakh people across 25 districts affected by the disaster, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.<\/p>\n

Providing an update on the evolving situation through a post on X on Thursday, the Chief Minister said the floods have impacted over 1,800 villages, claiming 41 lives so far while also causing the loss of thousands of livestock. He described the scale of destruction as unprecedented for several of the affected areas.<\/p>\n

Sarma attributed the flooding to a combination of upstream cloudbursts and exceptionally heavy local rainfall, stating that precipitation in some regions was 436 per cent above normal, leading to extensive inundation across the state.<\/p>\n

He said a coordinated response involving the Indian Air Force (IAF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and various state departments is underway, with rescue teams carrying out air and boat operations to evacuate stranded residents and deliver emergency assistance.<\/p>\n

According to the Chief Minister, the state has established more than 148 relief camps, where nearly 30,000 displaced people are currently taking shelter. Relief agencies have also supplied over 3 lakh kilograms of rice, along with drinking water and other essential commodities, to the worst-affected districts, with additional consignments being dispatched.<\/p>\n

Beyond the immediate response, Sarma said the Assam Government is working with the Government of India to formulate a comprehensive rehabilitation package aimed at supporting affected families in rebuilding their lives after the floodwaters recede.<\/p>\n

He further stated that once the immediate crisis is brought under control, the state plans to engage with neighbouring states to strengthen coordination mechanisms for addressing the impact of upstream cloudbursts and improving preparedness for similar disasters in the future.<\/p>\n

Flood response operations continue across several parts of Assam as authorities focus on rescue, relief distribution, and restoration of essential services in the affected districts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
