Guwahati, August 7<\/strong>: The Union Cabinet has given the green light to one of Assam’s largest highway infrastructure projects, approving the construction of a 135.87-km access-controlled four-lane corridor between Guwahati and Tezpur. Estimated to cost \u20b98,970.20 crore, the project is expected to significantly improve road connectivity and support economic growth across the region.<\/p>\n

The new corridor will be built along National Highway-15 under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll model. Designed as a high-speed, access-controlled highway, it is expected to substantially reduce travel time between Guwahati and Tezpur while offering safer and more efficient transportation for both passenger and freight vehicles.<\/p>\n

One of the project’s notable features is the inclusion of a 4.9-km Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Tezpur bypass. Developed in consultation with the Indian Air Force (IAF), the stretch will be capable of supporting emergency aircraft landings, adding strategic value to the highway beyond civilian transportation.<\/p>\n

The planned route will bypass several busy urban centres, including Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli and Tezpur, allowing long-distance traffic to avoid congested town roads and improving traffic flow across the north bank of the Brahmaputra.<\/p>\n

To support uninterrupted travel, the project includes an extensive range of engineering structures such as 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers and 46 underpasses. In a move aimed at balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation, an elephant underpass has also been incorporated into the Tezpur bypass to facilitate safe wildlife movement.<\/p>\n

The upcoming corridor is expected to serve as an alternative to the heavily used NH-27 East-West Corridor, helping distribute traffic more efficiently between the northern and southern banks of the Brahmaputra.<\/p>\n

Reacting to the approval, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet, describing the project as another milestone in Assam’s ongoing infrastructure transformation. He noted that the expressway joins a series of major projects already approved for the state, including the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, Guwahati Ring Road, Silchar Expressway, and the proposed Gohpur\u2013Numaligarh underwater tunnel.<\/p>\n

Government officials said the new highway is expected to improve road safety, reduce fuel consumption, lower vehicle operating costs and increase average travel speeds. Better connectivity is also expected to stimulate trade, tourism and industrial investment across Assam and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

In addition, the expressway will strengthen links with eight PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, improve access to the Aspirational Districts of Darrang and Udalguri, and enhance connectivity to important tourist destinations such as Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga National Park and Orang National Park. It will also provide better access to railway stations, airports and inland waterway terminals, creating a more integrated transport network for the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
