The powerful tremor brought down dozens of buildings and damaged thousands of properties across several areas. Rescue teams, emergency personnel and local residents have been working through the rubble in an effort to locate survivors who may still be trapped.<\/p>\n
Officials have warned that the situation could worsen as aftershocks continue to affect the region. The Colombian Geological Service has recorded 21 aftershocks since the main earthquake, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance in affected communities.<\/p>\n
The government has reported extensive damage to essential infrastructure. Around 1,575 homes, 18 healthcare centres and 52 schools have suffered damage, while at least 61 structures have completely collapsed.<\/p>\n
President Abelardo De La Espriella, who had only recently assumed office, declared an emergency to speed up the release of resources for rescue and relief operations. The earthquake has become the first major crisis confronting his administration.<\/p>\n
