New Delhi, August 15, 2026:<\/strong> Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s traditional attire added a distinct cultural touch to this year’s Independence Day celebrations, with his red Bandhani-style safa becoming one of the most noticeable elements of his appearance at the Red Fort.<\/p>\n

As he arrived to mark India’s 80th Independence Day, Modi wore a vibrant red tie-and-dye turban featuring intricate white and yellow patterns. The traditional headgear was paired with a white kurta and a brown sleeveless Nehru-style vest. Tricolour pocket squares in saffron, white and green completed the look, bringing a subtle national theme to the ensemble.<\/p>\n

The choice of a Bandhani-inspired turban also continued the Prime Minister’s long-running practice of incorporating India’s regional textile traditions into his Independence Day appearance.<\/p>\n

Bandhani’s Cultural Connection<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bandhani, also known as Bandhej, is a traditional tie-and-dye textile technique particularly associated with Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is created by tightly binding tiny portions of fabric before dyeing, producing characteristic dots and patterns when the bindings are removed.<\/p>\n

The craft is closely connected with the cultural traditions of western India and is widely used for colourful garments worn during weddings, festivals and other important occasions.<\/p>\n

The safa, meanwhile, carries considerable cultural significance in Rajasthan. Traditionally worn by men, the turban can represent honour, pride, identity and hospitality. Its colour, design and method of tying have historically varied according to the region and occasion.<\/p>\n

A Decade of Distinctive Independence Day Headgear<\/strong><\/p>\n

Modi’s choice of traditional turbans for Independence Day is now an established visual feature of the celebrations. Since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, he has appeared at the Red Fort in a succession of turbans inspired by different colours, fabrics and regional styles.<\/p>\n

The tradition itself began with a red Jodhpuri Bandhej-style turban during his first Independence Day appearance as Prime Minister in 2014. Subsequent years saw a wide range of regional influences, including saffron, yellow, multicoloured and Leheriya-inspired designs.<\/p>\n

This year’s red Bandhani safa therefore fits into a broader pattern of using traditional Indian craftsmanship as part of the Prime Minister’s ceremonial appearance.<\/p>\n
