A religious gathering in Bihar\u2019s Lakhisarai district turned deadly on Monday morning when a sudden wave of panic swept through devotees outside the Ashok Dham Temple, resulting in the deaths of seven people and injuries to several others.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of worshippers had assembled at the temple for prayers on the third Monday of Sawan when the situation reportedly deteriorated within a short span of time. Officials said the trouble began after an electric pole collapsed near the queue area, followed by rumours that a live wire had fallen among the devotees.<\/p>\n
The rumour triggered panic and caused people in the crowded area to push and move rapidly, creating a stampede-like situation. A portion of the barricading also reportedly collapsed as the pressure of the gathering increased.<\/p>\n
The large turnout was further intensified by the arrival of two trains in the area between around 6:30 am and 6:45 am, Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said. He added that arrangements had been made in advance to manage the expected rush, but the sudden increase in the number of devotees put additional pressure on the crowd-control system.<\/p>\n
Officials said the fallen pole was positioned near the men\u2019s queue. While an electrical cable was reportedly involved rather than a live power line, the belief that devotees had been exposed to live electricity contributed to the panic and affected the movement of people in the adjoining queue.<\/p>\n
Police and emergency teams reached the temple soon after the incident and began rescue and evacuation operations. The injured were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.<\/p>\n
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shivam Kumar said the initial information suggested that the collapse of the electric pole may have played a role in the incident. Reports of possible electrocution are also being examined, but officials said the exact chain of events will be established only after a detailed inquiry.<\/p>\n
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and instructed officials to ensure proper and immediate medical care for those injured. The government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the family of each deceased person.<\/p>\n
The Ashok Dham Temple, formally known as Shri Indradamaneshwar Mahadev Temple, is an important Shiva shrine in Lakhisarai and attracts large crowds during the month of Sawan. Monday prayers during the holy month typically draw particularly high numbers of devotees.<\/p>\n
