GUWAHATI, Aug 25:<\/strong> The controversy surrounding the reduction of Kaziranga National Park’s Eco-Sensitive Zone has taken a fresh political turn, with Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi questioning the inclusion of two autonomous council leaders in the state’s reconstituted Wildlife Board.<\/p>\n

In a sharp criticism of the Assam government’s environmental policies, Gogoi linked the decision on Kaziranga’s Eco-Sensitive Zone with what he described as continuing concerns over illegal mining in ecologically sensitive parts of the state.<\/p>\n

The Congress leader specifically questioned the appointment of Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, to the Assam State Board for Wildlife.<\/p>\n

Both have been listed in the board under the category of \u201cEminent Conservationist, Ecologist and Environmentalist.\u201d The Assam government recently reconstituted the State Board for Wildlife under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma serving as its Chairperson.<\/p>\n

Gogoi Links Appointments to Mining Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a post on X, Gogoi argued that the government’s decision to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga should also be viewed in the context of allegations and controversies related to mining in areas associated with the two autonomous councils.<\/p>\n

Referring to the Umrangso mining tragedy in Dima Hasao, Gogoi pointed to FIRs and legal proceedings connected with allegations of illegal rat-hole mining involving Gorlosa and his wife.<\/p>\n

Court records show that a case was directed to be registered following allegations related to illegal mining in the 3 Kilo or Kalamati area of Umrangso. The allegations remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings.<\/p>\n

The January 2025 mining disaster drew national attention after workers became trapped inside a flooded coal mine. The Union government later informed Parliament that nine workers had been trapped and that their mortal remains were subsequently recovered.<\/p>\n

Gogoi also referred to a subsequent case involving allegations of threats against a person who was expected to be an important witness. Gorlosa has denied allegations of issuing threats, according to reports on the matter.<\/p>\n

Questions Raised Over Mining in Karbi Anglong<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turning his attention to Ronghang, Gogoi referred to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council’s past dealings with mining permissions and the scrutiny they have received from the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee.<\/p>\n

In his post, Gogoi cited observations and directions attributed to the CEC concerning mining activities in areas connected to the Kaziranga landscape. He alleged that the authorities had failed to adequately address environmental concerns despite repeated warnings about the possible impact of mining on the region’s ecology.<\/p>\n

Court records from proceedings involving the Kaziranga landscape show that mining activity and quarry operations in areas bordering the national park and its catchment region have been subjects of scrutiny and regulatory action over the years.<\/p>\n

Kaziranga ESZ Decision at Centre of Debate<\/strong><\/p>\n

The latest criticism comes amid an ongoing debate over the Assam government’s move to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga National Park.<\/p>\n

The issue has triggered contrasting reactions, with Gogoi and other critics raising concerns about environmental protection, while supporters of the revised boundary have argued that a smaller buffer would reduce restrictions on local communities and development activities. Recent protests in the Kaziranga area also reflected support from some residents for the proposed one-kilometre buffer instead of a wider zone.<\/p>\n

Gogoi described the appointments and the broader approach towards environmental protection as a betrayal of public expectations, accusing the government of weakening the relationship between local communities and the environment on which they depend.<\/p>\n
