Kathmandu:<\/strong> Nepal is taking steps to ensure that victims of the devastating Bhote Koshi floods who remain unidentified can still be traced in the future, with the government preserving DNA and other identifying evidence before their remains are buried or otherwise managed.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Balendra Shah said the government would handle only those bodies that cannot be identified by their families. Remains that have already been identified are being returned to relatives, according to his statement issued on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Shah said DNA samples and other evidence capable of establishing a victim’s identity would be secured before any unidentified body is managed by the state. The move is intended to ensure that families can potentially establish the identity of missing relatives at a later stage.<\/p>\n

675 Bodies Recovered<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Prime Minister, 675 bodies had been recovered from several flood-affected areas, including Rasuwa, Dhading, Nuwakot, Chitwan, Tanahun, Gorkha, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West.<\/p>\n

The recovered remains are being placed in airtight bags and handled under Nepal’s Unidentified and Unclaimed Bodies Management (First Amendment) Directive, 2026.<\/p>\n

The catastrophic flooding struck the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa on August 26, causing extensive destruction along the river corridor and damaging homes, infrastructure and other critical facilities. The government says search, rescue, medical treatment, relief and restoration operations have been intensified across the affected areas.<\/p>\n

Nepal Clarifies Position on International Assistance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has rejected reports that the country has refused international assistance following the disaster.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Khanal said Nepal continues to require support for rescue, relief, reconstruction and rehabilitation. He said specialised international assistance is already being used for complex operations, including technical teams from India and China involved in areas such as tunnel rescue.<\/p>\n

The Foreign Minister said the government is assessing damage to roads, infrastructure and hydropower facilities to determine its wider recovery requirements. He also stressed that Nepal will need substantial support during the longer-term reconstruction phase.<\/p>\n

Government Encourages Tourism and Contributions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khanal also sought to reassure international visitors, saying that Nepal remains largely open to travellers despite the devastation in the worst-hit areas. He highlighted destinations including Pokhara, Lumbini, Chitwan, Janakpur and most mountain regions as continuing to remain accessible.<\/p>\n

The government has also kept the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund open for contributions through official channels as relief and recovery efforts continue.<\/p>\n

As search operations continue, authorities are simultaneously dealing with the difficult task of identifying recovered victims while maintaining records that could help families locate their missing relatives in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
