A new Assamese film centred on a woman’s struggle against deeply rooted social conventions is set to reach audiences later this year, with the teaser and official poster of ‘Aadishakti’ unveiled in Guwahati on Sunday.

The launch event was held at Aideo Cinema Hall in Panjabari, where the makers introduced the film to the audience ahead of its scheduled theatrical release on December 4, 2026.

Produced by Ayra Studios, also known as Ayra Motion Pictures, ‘Aadishakti’ has been directed by Bitopan Kashyap, who has also penned the screenplay and dialogues. The story comes from Indrani Baruah and combines elements of love, mystery, music and social issues.

At the heart of the film is Aditi, portrayed by debut actress Dr Arshia Mahanta. The character is presented as a young woman who refuses to accept patriarchal control and established social norms. Through Aditi’s journey, the film examines courage, resistance and the challenges faced by women confronting long-standing social expectations.

The film has already received recognition on the festival circuit. At the Global Cine Confluence (GCC) – Delhi Film Convention & Summit 2026 in New Delhi, ‘Aadishakti’ received three honours. These included Best Feature Film, Best Original Story for Indrani Baruah and Best Debutante Actress for Dr Arshia Mahanta.

Music is also expected to be an important part of the film’s narrative. One of its notable songs is the emotional duet “Oni Boni”, performed by popular singers Zubeen Garg and Zublee Baruah. The song has been described as their final cinematic collaboration.

Director Bitopan Kashyap said the film goes beyond conventional entertainment and attempts to address women’s empowerment and social conflicts through an emotional story. He expressed hope that its distinct treatment and social message would connect with audiences across Assam.

For Dr Arshia Mahanta, ‘Aadishakti’ represents her first appearance as an actor. A medical professional by profession, she described the experience of entering the film industry as an enriching journey and credited the film’s team for its support.

Mahanta also spoke about managing her medical career alongside acting. She said her parents had taught her the importance of maintaining a balance between professional responsibilities and personal interests. According to her, people should also make time to pursue activities they genuinely enjoy, even when those interests are different from their primary profession.

Actor Nirupam Saikia appears in a leading role alongside Mahanta. Saikia said he appreciated the opportunity to work with a new director and a debut performer. He expressed confidence that the film’s storyline and overall presentation would provide audiences with an engaging cinematic experience.

The ensemble cast includes Manjula Barua, Rina Borah, Tapan Das, Aparna Dutta Choudhury, Jolly Laskar, Ashim Krishna Baruah, Abatush Bhuyan, Pallavi Bora Mahanta, Pranami Bharati, Ujjal Rajkhowa, Rajib Duwori, Prasanta Saloi, Mayukh Sharma, Rimlim Bhuyan, Barasha Das and Master Ayush Mahanta.

With its focus on women’s agency, social conventions and human emotions, ‘Aadishakti’ is now preparing for its theatrical release.
