Guwahati, October 27:<\/strong> Questions surrounding the background of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the Hotel Bilas Inn shooting that claimed five lives, have come into focus following reports of his alleged involvement in earlier fraud cases, financial disputes and other criminal complaints across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

Gogoi, reportedly a native of Lebangkula near Naharkatiya in Dibrugarh district, has been accused of impersonating a police officer in Arunachal Pradesh several years ago. According to the allegations, he wore an Arunachal Pradesh Police uniform and collected money from individuals by falsely presenting himself as a police official.<\/p>\n

Reports suggest that complaints concerning these alleged activities were lodged at police stations in Assam, as well as Deomali and Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh. However, the details and present status of these cases have not been independently verified.<\/p>\n

Other allegations relating to business disputes have also emerged. A businessman reportedly approached Pulibor Police Station in Jorhat district on June 12, 2024, accusing Gogoi of attempting to take control of a business establishment. The complaint allegedly followed a confrontation in which several individuals sustained injuries.<\/p>\n

Another reported incident dates back to November 2023 in Sivasagar, where Gogoi allegedly hired a JCB excavator but failed to clear the rental payment. The equipment owner reportedly approached Demow Police Station after Gogoi allegedly refused to settle the dues and issued threats when confronted over the matter.<\/p>\n

There are also claims of earlier cheque-dishonour proceedings involving Gogoi under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. Reports mention a case allegedly initiated by HDFC Bank in May 2022 and another involving Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company in 2023. The latter was reportedly settled in 2024, although the relevant court records and case outcomes require independent confirmation.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, questions have also been raised over Gogoi’s identity, with some accounts claiming that he previously used the name Jon Gogoi before adopting his present name. These claims have not been officially substantiated.<\/p>\n

The latest developments follow the deadly shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati’s Bora Service area on October 26. Five people, including four members of the hotel owner’s family, lost their lives, while another person sustained gunshot injuries.<\/p>\n

Guwahati Police arrested Gogoi shortly after the incident and seized a .32-calibre pistol suspected to have been used in the attack. Preliminary investigations indicate that a dispute concerning the hotel’s lease agreement may have triggered the shooting.<\/p>\n

Police are continuing their investigation into the killings. The various allegations concerning Gogoi’s past activities remain subject to verification through official police records and court documents, and no conclusions about his involvement in those earlier matters can be drawn from the reports alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
