Guwahati:<\/strong> Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the Union government’s decision to extend the service period of Agniveers by two years, calling it an important step towards strengthening national security and supporting young military personnel. He also assured that Assam’s 12% reservation for eligible former Agniveers would remain in effect for those seeking employment in designated state government services.<\/p>\n

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the revised arrangement on November 4, 2026. The decision allows the 75% of Agniveers who were previously expected to leave military service after four years to opt for an additional two-year engagement. The remaining 25% will continue to be considered for regular military service based on merit under the existing provisions.<\/p>\n

Chief of Defence Staff General N. S. Raja Subramani, addressing the Cabinet briefing in New Delhi, explained that the revised scheme creates a pathway for Agniveers to pursue permanent careers in the armed forces. Those completing the additional two-year engagement will be eligible for regular enrolment, subject to their willingness and prescribed selection criteria.<\/p>\n

The decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the Agnipath scheme, introduced in June 2022. According to the Ministry of Defence, feedback on the performance of Agniveers has been positive, particularly regarding their physical fitness, discipline, motivation and technical capabilities. The additional service period will also provide higher remuneration, enhanced Seva Nidhi benefits and seniority provisions.<\/p>\n

Reacting to the decision, Sarma credited Prime Minister Modi for recognising the contribution of Agniveers and prioritising the country’s defence requirements. He said the first batch of Agniveers had demonstrated their capabilities and earned the confidence needed to continue serving the nation.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister further confirmed that Assam’s 12% horizontal reservation policy would continue to benefit eligible former Agniveers who choose to pursue civilian careers. The reservation covers specified posts in the Assam Police, State Disaster Response Force, Forest Department, prison services, Fire and Emergency Services and other designated departments.<\/p>\n

Under the state’s recruitment guidelines, eligible candidates must be permanent residents of Assam who have completed their initial four-year engagement under the Agnipath scheme and obtained the required Agniveer certificate. Annual recruitment drives under the reservation policy are scheduled to begin in 2027.<\/p>\n

With the revised Central policy and Assam’s employment provisions, Agniveers will have additional opportunities to continue military service or pursue government employment after completing their initial tenure, depending on their eligibility and career preferences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
