The Youth Mission for Clean River (YMCR) has urged the Arunachal Pradesh government to enact a dedicated “Arunachal Pradesh River Protection Act” to combat rising threats to the state’s river ecosystems.

The appeal was made during a meeting held on Monday between a YMCR delegation, led by Chairman S D Loda, and Chief Minister Pema Khandu at the state secretariat in Itanagar.

Highlighting growing concerns over illegal riverbed extraction, pollution, and the disruption of natural water flows, YMCR emphasized the urgent need for robust legal and administrative mechanisms to safeguard rivers.

The group proposed that the legislation should clearly define community responsibilities, establish strict enforcement provisions, and draw from successful river conservation frameworks implemented in other Indian states.

YMCR also recommended the formation of a specialized department or cell under the state’s environment or water resources department. This body would monitor river health, enforce protective regulations, coordinate restoration projects, and carry out public awareness initiatives.

The group suggested that the proposed unit could work in conjunction with the recently enacted Arunachal Pradesh Flood Plain Zoning Act, 2025, to strengthen river ecosystem protection.

To further promote public engagement, YMCR called for the celebration of an annual “Arunachal River Day” and the hosting of a state-level conclave focused on environmental protection.

Additionally, the delegation requested Chief Minister Khandu to become the chief patron of YMCR, stating that his endorsement would encourage youth participation in river conservation efforts.

Commending the group’s proactive initiatives, the chief minister later shared a message on social media:

“It was inspiring to interact with the passionate members of Youth Mission for Clean River. These young individuals are not only taking direct action through river clean-ups and community education but are also committed to driving policy change to protect our state’s natural resources.”

CM Khandu expressed full support for YMCR’s vision and urged collective involvement in preserving Arunachal Pradesh’s rivers.
