Tinsukia, Assam: Three Indian Army personnel were injured when suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) militants launched a grenade and gunfire attack on an Army camp in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district, late on October 16.

The assault took place around 12:30 AM when militants hurled grenades and opened fire on the camp. Soldiers retaliated immediately, and the exchange of fire continued for nearly 30 minutes before the attackers escaped into the nearby forests.

Security forces — including the Indian Army, Assam Police, and paramilitary units — have since launched a massive search operation across Kakopathar and adjoining areas. Drone surveillance and road blockades have been deployed to track the perpetrators.

The injured personnel are receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. Residents in the vicinity said they heard loud explosions and heavy gunfire, triggering panic in the area.

Authorities suspect the involvement of ULFA (I), led by Paresh Baruah, which has been linked to several past attacks in Upper Assam. The group had earlier claimed responsibility for a 2023 grenade strike near the Dirak Army camp.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned the attack and assured that extensive operations are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Security has been tightened across the district as search operations continue.
