Guwahati Police on Thursday announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with a cheating and theft case involving a high-end Nikon camera and accessories allegedly stolen during an online marketplace transaction arranged through OLX.
According to Guwahati Police, a team from the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) under Dispur Police Station conducted the operation and arrested the accused identified as Abhijit Sharma (35), a resident of Odalbakra, and Bicky Singh of Paltanbazar Railway Colony.
Police stated that the case revolved around the alleged theft of a Nikon Z6 II camera along with two camera lenses and other accessories. The transaction had reportedly been arranged through OLX, an online classifieds platform commonly used for buying and selling second-hand products.
As per the police statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the accused allegedly gained the trust of the seller by posing as buyers and conducting the deal near Dwaraka Enclave in Dwarka Nagar. During the meeting, the suspects reportedly fled with the camera equipment under the pretext of arranging payment for the goods.
Following the complaint, the Dispur Police launched an investigation and traced the accused persons. During the operation, police recovered the stolen Nikon Z6 II camera, two lenses, additional accessories, one mobile phone, and cash amounting to ₹36,000 from their possession.
Police officials stated that legal action has been initiated against the arrested individuals and further investigation into the case is currently underway.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over fraud and theft linked to online marketplace transactions. Police have advised citizens to remain cautious while conducting deals through online classified platforms and to prefer secure public locations or verified payment methods during such exchanges.
Authorities also urged people to immediately report any suspicious activity or fraud attempt to the nearest police station to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
