GUWAHATI, June 6: The Higher Education Department of Assam has made Aadhaar numbers and Aadhaar-linked bank accounts compulsory for students seeking benefits under various state government welfare schemes, including the Fee Waiver Scheme, Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Aasoni and Mukhya Mantri Nijut Babu Aasoni.
In a recent directive, the Director of Higher Education instructed all universities and colleges across the state to ensure that students’ Aadhaar-related details are properly verified and updated on the SAMARTH portal.
The decision follows a virtual meeting held with educational institutions earlier this week, during which authorities stressed the need for accurate student records. Colleges and universities have been asked to review the Aadhaar information already available on the portal and rectify any discrepancies or incomplete entries without delay.
The department has also directed Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to assist students who have not yet enrolled for Aadhaar, ensuring that they obtain the document and upload the required details to the portal at the earliest.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at streamlining the verification process and ensuring timely disbursement of benefits under various student welfare schemes implemented by the state government.
The directive will apply to students enrolled in colleges and universities across Assam who are beneficiaries of higher education support programmes.
