GUWAHATI, June 6: The All Assam Electricity Consumers Association (AAECA) has strongly criticised the recent increase in electricity charges under the Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA) mechanism, alleging that the move will place an additional financial burden on consumers already grappling with rising living costs.

In a statement issued on Friday, AAECA conveners Ajay Acharya and Hillol Bhattacharya expressed concern over the decision to raise the FPPPA surcharge from 16 paise to 28 paise per unit. The association argued that electricity tariffs in Assam are already comparatively high and that the latest increase would further strain household budgets across the state.

The consumer body questioned the timing of the hike, stating that many families are facing economic challenges due to increasing prices of essential commodities. It also alleged that the decision reflects a lack of consideration for the difficulties faced by ordinary consumers.

AAECA further pointed out that several states, including Delhi, Bihar and Tamil Nadu, provide substantial electricity subsidies and free power benefits to consumers. The association questioned why similar relief measures are not being extended in Assam despite claims of rapid development in the state.

Demanding an immediate rollback of the enhanced surcharge, the association urged the government to review the decision and take steps to protect consumers from additional financial pressure. It also appealed to electricity consumers across Assam to remain united and raise their voices against the tariff increase.

The association warned that continued increases in power charges could adversely affect household finances and place a heavier burden on the common people of the state.
