GUWAHATI: Preparations for Census 2027 gathered momentum in Assam with a house-listing exercise conducted at the residence of Chhattisgarh Governor Shri Ramen Deka in Guwahati’s K.C. Road area of Chatribari.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) said the exercise was carried out as part of the ongoing preparations for the nationwide Census. The civic body shared details of the activity on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of systematic household-level data collection ahead of the main population enumeration.

During the exercise, officials carried out the listing of households and collected essential information required for the Census process. Such field-level work forms an important part of the first phase of Census 2027, which focuses on houselisting and housing-related information.

According to the GMC, the participation and cooperation of residents are important to ensuring comprehensive coverage and improving the reliability of Census data.

The data collected during the exercise is expected to support government planning and policy decisions in areas such as public infrastructure, essential services, welfare programmes and other development requirements.

The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India has scheduled the first phase of Census 2027, covering Houselisting and Housing Census operations, across different states and Union Territories during 2026. In Assam, the official schedule places the Houselisting and Housing Census period between August 17 and September 15, 2026.

The Census 2027 process is being conducted under the framework established by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India. Official Census documents specify the information to be recorded during the houselisting phase, including details relating to buildings and census houses and their basic characteristics.

Shri Ramen Deka, who is currently serving as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, is a former Lok Sabha member from Assam. He assumed office as the 10th Governor of Chhattisgarh on July 31, 2024.

The completion of house-listing activities at individual residences is part of the broader field exercise being undertaken across Assam as authorities prepare the groundwork for the next national Census.

With the houselisting phase now underway in the state, residents’ cooperation with enumerators and accurate submission of information will be important for ensuring comprehensive coverage and reliable Census data.
