GUWAHATI: Gauhati University, in collaboration with Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, will host an international conference on river cultures, regional development and sustainability from January 27 to 29, 2027. The event will be jointly organised by the university’s Centre for Brahmaputra Studies and Monash University, with a special focus on the Brahmaputra–Barak river basin systems.

Titled River Cultures, Regional Development and Sustainability, the conference will explore the relationship between rivers, cultural heritage, livelihoods and environmental protection. Discussions will cover river-dependent communities, agriculture, fisheries, inland water transport, biodiversity, climate change, floods, erosion and sustainable river management.

The conference will also provide a platform for scholars, researchers, policymakers, practitioners and students to share their findings and discuss sustainable development strategies for riverine regions. Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations under four major themes: river cultures and heritage, regional development, sustainability and ecology, and governance and community policy.

Interested participants must submit their abstracts by December 10, 2026. Further information on submission guidelines and participation is available on the official conference website at https://riverscapes2027.gauhati.ac.in/. Queries can also be sent to riverscapes2027@gauhati.ac.in.
