Guwahati, October 26, 2026: With plans underway to shift several major medical services from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal on Monday visited Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati to evaluate infrastructure development and preparations for the proposed transition.
The minister inspected different sections of the hospital, assessed the progress of ongoing construction activities and held discussions with senior medical officials regarding improvements in hospital administration and patient care.
The visit primarily focused on ensuring that MMCH is adequately prepared to accommodate departments proposed to be relocated from GMCH as part of a broader infrastructure redevelopment initiative.
During the inspection, Singhal instructed the officials concerned to accelerate pending construction activities and ensure that the projects are completed within their stipulated deadlines. He also stressed the importance of strengthening hospital operations and improving the overall quality of healthcare services.
The Assam Health Department is preparing to temporarily relocate most GMCH departments to the MMCH facility at Panbazar to facilitate repair and reconstruction work at the existing GMCH campus.
Under the proposed schedule, the relocation is targeted for completion by November 15, with medical services at the new facility expected to become operational from November 16. The transition is intended to ensure continuity of treatment while redevelopment work progresses at GMCH.
Director of Medical Education Dr. Manoj Kumar Choudhury, GMCH Principal Dr. Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, Superintendent Dr. Devajit Choudhury, and other senior health officials were present during the minister’s inspection.
The proposed relocation and ongoing infrastructure improvements form part of efforts to strengthen public healthcare facilities in Guwahati and provide improved medical services to patients from Assam and neighbouring regions.
