GUWAHATI, October 3, 2026: Assam has commissioned an Eklavya Model Residential School at Phuloni in Karbi Anglong district to expand access to quality education for tribal students. Dr Ranoj Pegu, Assam’s Education Minister, announced the development in a post on his official X account, describing the institution as the state’s sixth Eklavya Model Residential School.

In his announcement, Pegu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the initiative, stating that the residential school would bring quality education closer to children in underserved tribal areas. The development is intended to improve educational access for tribal communities, particularly those living in remote areas.

Eklavya Model Residential Schools operate under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The programme aims to provide quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe students from Classes VI to XII, alongside academic learning, sports and other development activities. The National Education Society for Tribal Students oversees the scheme at the national level.

The Phuloni school is expected to widen educational opportunities for students in the region. However, further official details about its enrolment, facilities and commencement of academic activities were not available in the announcement.

The school’s status as the sixth institution requires clarification against the Ministry of Tribal Affairs’ August 2026 figures, which already listed six functional EMRS institutions in Assam.
