Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday said the decision on the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Assam will be taken by the party’s central leadership after discussions with party MLAs.
Speaking to reporters after returning from New Delhi, Gogoi said the matter is currently under consideration by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which will make the final decision regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
He stated that the party high command is consulting elected legislators before announcing the new CLP leader and added that the opinions of Congress MLAs are being taken into account during the process.
“The All India Congress Committee will decide who will become the party leader,” Gogoi said while responding to questions on the leadership issue within the state Congress unit.
The Congress leader also announced that a meeting of opposition legislators has been scheduled for Thursday evening. The meeting is expected to focus on coordination among opposition parties and preparations for the upcoming Assembly session.
Gogoi further said that Congress MLAs would jointly visit the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday, signalling an effort to project unity ahead of the legislative proceedings.
The selection of the new Leader of the Opposition has drawn considerable political attention after the formation of the new Assembly. The Congress leadership is reportedly aiming to ensure internal consensus while strengthening the party’s position ahead of key debates in the House.
