New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has received its highest-ever budget allocation of ₹1,39,289.48 crore for the financial year 2026–27, marking an 8.27% increase over the Budget Estimate (BE) for 2025–26, according to information shared by the Ministry.
A major share of the allocation has been earmarked for school education, with the Department of School Education and Literacy receiving ₹83,562.26 crore, its highest-ever budget allocation. The enhanced funding reflects the Union Government’s continued focus on strengthening school infrastructure, improving access to quality education and supporting educational development across the country.
The Department of Higher Education has been allocated ₹55,727.22 crore for FY 2026–27, according to the Ministry’s budget infographic.
The Ministry stated that the overall budget allocation for education has increased significantly from ₹65,867 crore in 2013–14 to ₹1,39,289.48 crore in FY 2026–27, highlighting the expansion of government spending on the sector over the period.
Responding to the announcement, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, saying that the continued enhancement of budgetary allocations reflects the Government’s commitment to strengthening education and empowering young people.
The latest allocation is expected to support the Government’s broader objective of building a developed India through expanded access to quality education, with increased investment across both school and higher education sectors.
