Guwahati, July 30: Safety concerns have surfaced at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after a portion of the ceiling inside the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department collapsed on Thursday, injuring four patients undergoing treatment.
The incident occurred when part of the ceiling suddenly broke loose and fell inside the ward, causing panic among patients, attendants and hospital staff. Medical personnel immediately responded to the situation and shifted the injured patients for treatment.
Hospital authorities confirmed that all four patients sustained injuries but are in stable condition. They are currently receiving medical care, and no fatalities have been reported.
Preliminary reports indicate that the damaged section of the ceiling had been in poor condition for some time. Although the exact cause of the collapse has not yet been established, ageing infrastructure and delayed maintenance are suspected to have contributed to the incident.
The mishap has renewed concerns over the structural condition of government healthcare facilities, particularly older buildings within GMCH. Patients and their families have called for a thorough inspection of hospital infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
