Guwahati, June 2: In a major anti-narcotics operation, the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station arrested an alleged drug peddler and recovered heroin during a raid conducted in the city’s Indira Nagar area.
According to a statement issued by Guwahati Police on X, the accused has been identified as Mujammil Hoque alias Moja (24), a resident of Rangia in Assam’s Kamrup district.
Police said the arrest was made following a targeted operation carried out by the Basistha Police Station team. During the raid, officers recovered three soap boxes containing approximately 26 grams of suspected heroin, a packaging method commonly used by drug traffickers in the region.
Apart from the narcotics, the police also seized a mobile phone believed to be linked to the accused’s activities and a Scooty bearing registration number AS01GJ3661, which was allegedly being used in connection with the transportation of the contraband.
The operation forms part of the ongoing crackdown against illegal drug trafficking and narcotics networks in Guwahati and other parts of Assam. Over the past few years, Assam Police has intensified anti-drug operations under the state’s broader campaign against narcotics, resulting in numerous arrests and seizures.
Following the arrest, police initiated legal proceedings against the accused under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigators are also examining whether the accused had links to a larger drug distribution network operating in the region.
Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation progresses.
Guwahati Police reiterated its commitment to combating the drug menace and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing information related to narcotics trafficking and illegal drug activities.
