A major theft was reported at a warehouse belonging to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited in the Adabari area of Guwahati, with unidentified miscreants allegedly stealing telecom equipment worth nearly Rs 3 crore.
According to police sources, the incident took place at the BSNL facility located under the jurisdiction of Assam Police at Jalukbari Police Station in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district.
A formal complaint was lodged by Toufik Rahman, following which police registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
Officials said the stolen materials included antennas, fibre data cables, power cables, connectors, radio units, and several other components used in telecom tower installations and network infrastructure development.
Investigators suspect the theft was carried out in a highly organised manner. The accused reportedly broke open the existing locks of the warehouse, removed the equipment, and later replaced the locks before fleeing from the spot. Police believe the operation was carefully planned and executed.
The incident has triggered concern among local residents and officials, especially because the warehouse is located close to Jalukbari Police Station. Questions have also been raised regarding security arrangements at the facility.
Authorities stated that the theft has affected network installation services in parts of Assam, as many of the stolen items were essential for telecom infrastructure and connectivity projects.
Police teams have begun efforts to identify those involved in the theft and recover the stolen equipment. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
