Nagaon: With the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election approaching, the district administration has intensified preparations at the polling-station level, with election officials directed to identify and address gaps in basic facilities before voting day.
A review meeting involving zonal and sector officers engaged in election duty was held at the conference hall of the Nagaon District Commissioner’s office on Monday. The meeting was chaired by District Commissioner and District Election Officer Aranyak Saikia.
According to the district administration, 1,339 polling stations across five Legislative Assembly constituencies in Nagaon district will be covered by 203 sectors and 53 zonal officers for the election-related arrangements.
During the meeting, officials discussed the practical challenges that could arise while managing polling stations and reviewed issues related to their location, communication facilities, transportation, accessibility and security.
The sector and zonal officers have been instructed to personally visit the polling stations under their respective jurisdictions before polling. During these inspections, they will assess the available facilities and identify problems that need to be resolved ahead of election day.
Saikia directed the officers to complete the required arrangements within the stipulated time. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring adequate lighting, protective boundary walls, drinking water, toilet facilities and proper road connectivity at polling locations.
The officers were also asked to remain vigilant and take prompt steps to rectify shortcomings found during their field visits. The administration aims to ensure that both voters and election personnel have access to essential facilities while polling is conducted.
Under the field-level election management system, a sector generally covers around 10 polling stations, while a zonal officer is responsible for approximately three to four sectors. The arrangement is intended to facilitate closer supervision and coordination during the polling process.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to go to the polls on October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9, according to the election schedule.
Additional District Commissioners Gopal Sarma and Pallabi Gogoi, along with officials and employees from the Education and Public Health departments and Circle Officers from different parts of the district, attended the review meeting.
The district administration is continuing its preparations as the by-election process moves forward, with polling arrangements and field-level coordination remaining a key focus ahead of voting day.
