Dhemaji, October 29: The fourth edition of the Mising Sports Carnival commenced at Gogamukh in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Thursday, with Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain formally inaugurating the event. Nearly 2,500 participants from different districts of Assam have joined the sporting initiative organised by Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK).

Beyond promoting sports, this year’s carnival carries a strong social message, focusing on the prevention of child marriage and the empowerment of women. The event seeks to encourage young people to engage in sporting activities while raising awareness about issues affecting society.

The introduction of boxing as a new competitive discipline has become one of the key highlights of the carnival. The addition is expected to provide aspiring boxers with a platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable competitive experience.

Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, along with Jonai MLA Bhubon Pegu and Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, attended the inaugural ceremony. Pegu praised the efforts of Takam Mising Porin Kebang in bringing together young athletes and promoting sports alongside social awareness.

Expressing confidence in the potential of the participants, the minister hoped that the carnival would help discover talented sportspersons from the Mising community and create opportunities for them to gain wider recognition.

The annual sporting initiative highlights the role of community organisations in encouraging grassroots sports and providing young athletes with opportunities to develop their abilities.
