Guwahati: The preservation of indigenous languages and cultural traditions is essential to protecting the identity of future generations, Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu said while taking part in a discussion on tribal beliefs, traditions and cultural heritage in Guwahati.
Pegu attended a discussion programme at Shilpagram, Panjabari, organised under the initiative of the Janajati Dharma Sanskriti Suraksha Manch, Assam. The programme focused on the theme of “Janajati Beliefs, Practices, Traditions and Culture.”
During the interaction, the minister exchanged views on various aspects of tribal community life, including traditional beliefs, practices, philosophies and cultural consciousness.
Emphasising the importance of language, Pegu said that preserving one’s mother tongue is closely connected with preserving one’s identity. He stressed that cultural identity is carried from one generation to another through language, beliefs, values, customs and traditional practices.
Focus on Passing Heritage to Future Generations
Pegu described Assam’s diverse tribal traditions as an integral part of the state’s collective cultural heritage. He said safeguarding these traditions should not be viewed simply as an effort to preserve the past, but also as a responsibility towards future generations.
According to the minister, communities have a role to play in ensuring that their traditional knowledge, values and cultural practices continue to be recognised and passed on.
He called upon people to contribute to the preservation of their cultural heritage through both individual efforts and collective social participation.
The discussion at Shilpagram brought attention to the diverse cultural traditions of Assam’s tribal communities and the importance of maintaining awareness of these traditions amid changing social circumstances.
