Guwahati: A coordinated police operation spanning multiple districts led to the recovery of a rented vehicle allegedly being transported to Nagaland for an unauthorised sale, with six suspects arrested in connection with the case.
The operation was carried out by a team from Hatigaon Police Station under the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) after the owner reported that the vehicle had not been returned even after the rental agreement had expired.
Police launched a search using the vehicle’s GPS tracking system and coordinated with personnel from Titabor Police Station and Mariani Police Station to trace its movement. Acting on the information, the joint team intercepted the vehicle before it could be taken across the state border.
The six arrested have been identified as Kaustav Jyoti Saikia, Bhaskar Barua, Abhinash Saikia, and Bikash Das, all from Golaghat district, along with Prandip Baruah and Anurag Choudhary, both residents of Mariani.
During the operation, officers recovered the rented vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-GN-2716. They also seized two other vehicles—a Bolero Pickup (AS-22-AC-0643) and a Mahindra Thar (AR-01-P-3745)—which are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police have registered a case and initiated legal proceedings against the accused. Investigators are now probing whether the incident is an isolated case or part of a broader network involved in the illegal movement and sale of vehicles across state borders.
The successful recovery highlights the growing role of GPS technology and inter-district coordination in tracking stolen or misappropriated vehicles and preventing cross-border vehicle-related crimes.
