Sonapur: Sonapur Higher Secondary School has received a major infrastructure upgrade with an investment of ₹8.03 crore, aimed at providing students with an improved and modern learning environment. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu shared details of the development in a social media post, highlighting the school’s long history and contribution to education in the Sonapur region.
The institution was originally established as Sonapur Middle English School on May 15, 1952, with the vision of promoting education across the greater Sonapur area. It was established through the combined efforts of the local community and the government.
The founding committee included late Gunakanta Mahanta as President, late Durgaprasad Das as Secretary and late Padmaram Das as Assistant Secretary. Ramesh Chandra Chakraborty served as the school’s first Headmaster.
The institution was upgraded to Sonapur Higher Secondary School in 1977, expanding its role in providing education to students from the region. Over more than seven decades, the school has contributed to the educational development of Sonapur, with several of its alumni going on to make their mark at the state and national levels.
The school currently has nearly 1,000 students and a total of 37 teaching and non-teaching staff. The latest ₹8.03 crore investment is expected to strengthen its infrastructure and create better facilities for students and staff.
The development is part of the Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan and reflects ongoing efforts to improve educational infrastructure. With its long-standing history and growing student population, the infrastructure augmentation is expected to support the school’s future educational needs.
