Chümoukedima, Nagaland, September 19, 2026: Education leaders from across the Northeast gathered in Chümoukedima, Nagaland, for the inaugural session of the Education Conclave 2026, with discussions focusing on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the region.
Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu attended the opening session of the two-day conclave and shared his views on the implementation of NEP 2020 in the northeastern states.
The inaugural session was attended by Dr. Vanlalthlana of Mizoram, Shri Kishor Barman of Tripura, Shri Mutchu Mithi, MLA and Adviser to the Hon’ble Minister of Education of Arunachal Pradesh, along with other dignitaries.
The central theme of the session was “Implementation of NEP 2020: Vision, Challenges & Opportunities for the North Eastern States.” Discussions highlighted the importance of adapting the education policy to the distinctive social, cultural and linguistic characteristics of the Northeast.
Pegu emphasised the significance of NEP 2020 for a region known for its diverse tribal communities and rich linguistic traditions. He highlighted the policy’s emphasis on education in the mother tongue as an opportunity to strengthen learning while also helping preserve and promote indigenous languages and identities.
The Assam minister also expressed his appreciation to Temjen Imna Along, Minister for Higher Education and Tourism, Government of Nagaland, for providing the platform to share perspectives on the implementation of NEP 2020 and its potential for the northeastern states.
The conclave provides an opportunity for education policymakers and representatives from different northeastern states to discuss common challenges, exchange experiences and explore approaches for strengthening the region’s education system.
The event comes amid ongoing efforts by states and educational institutions across the Northeast to implement various provisions of NEP 2020, including reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes, encouraging multidisciplinary education and making education more responsive to local contexts.
The two-day Education Conclave 2026 in Chümoukedima is expected to provide a platform for further discussions on education policy, implementation challenges and opportunities for collaboration among the northeastern states.
