Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday announced an ambitious long-term modernization roadmap for Tura, revealing that development projects worth nearly ₹2,000 crore are being planned in phases to transform the urban landscape of the town.
Sharing the update through a post on X, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said a high-level review meeting was conducted to assess the progress of ongoing infrastructure and development projects in Tura while also discussing strategic initiatives for the future growth of the town.
According to Sangma, the government’s vision is centered on implementing “transformative infrastructure interventions” aimed at completely revitalizing Tura and improving urban facilities, connectivity, and civic infrastructure.
The Chief Minister stated that the modernization roadmap will be executed in phases with an estimated investment of approximately ₹2,000 crore. He added that the initiative is expected to significantly reshape Tura’s urban infrastructure and strengthen its position as one of Meghalaya’s key urban centers.
Sangma also informed that projects worth around ₹200 crore have already been completed successfully. These completed works, he noted, have laid a strong foundation for the larger and more extensive projects planned in the coming years.
While the Chief Minister did not specify the individual projects included in the roadmap, the announcement signals the Meghalaya government’s increasing focus on urban development and infrastructure expansion in the Garo Hills region.
The proposed investments are expected to cover multiple sectors, including road connectivity, public infrastructure, urban beautification, drainage systems, civic amenities, and modernization of public services. The initiative is also likely to boost economic activities, improve living standards, and create employment opportunities in the region.
Tura, which serves as the administrative headquarters of West Garo Hills district, has witnessed rapid urban expansion in recent years. The government’s latest announcement is being viewed as a major step toward addressing urban challenges while preparing the town for future growth and development.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the completed projects and ongoing planning efforts reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable and inclusive development across Meghalaya.
