Guwahati: An earthquake measuring 4.1 in magnitude struck Assam on Tuesday morning, with tremors reported in Guwahati and parts of western Assam.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 9:57:22 am on September 8, 2026, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located in Goalpara, Assam, at 25.974°N latitude and 90.941°E longitude. The NCS classifies the event as 81 km west-southwest of Guwahati.
The tremor was felt in several parts of Guwahati, prompting some residents and office-goers to briefly step outside. Reports indicated that the shaking was relatively mild and lasted only a short time.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage following the earthquake. Local authorities and disaster management agencies are expected to continue monitoring the situation for any further seismic activity.
The latest earthquake data published by the NCS confirms that the event was reviewed and recorded as a 4.1-magnitude earthquake in Goalpara.
The earthquake once again highlights the seismic vulnerability of Assam and the wider Northeast region. The NCS, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, is the country’s nodal agency for monitoring earthquake activity and operates a nationwide seismological network.
