77 Cattle Seized, 11 Held During Police Operation in Mangaldai

Mangaldai: A police operation targeting the alleged illegal movement of cattle through the river route in Darrang district resulted in the seizure of 77 cattle and the apprehension of 11 persons, Darrang Police said.

The action was carried out by Mangaldai Police during river patrolling near Gadhowa Ferry Ghat on the Brahmaputra. Acting on specific information, police intercepted two mechanised boats suspected to be involved in the transportation of cattle.

According to the information available, one of the boats was carrying 65 cattle, while the smaller vessel had another 12 cattle on board. Eleven people were present on the two boats at the time of the interception.

Police sought documents relating to the ownership of the cattle and their lawful transportation. As the required documents were reportedly not produced, the cattle as well as both boats were seized following the operation.

The 11 persons were taken into custody for verification and further legal proceedings. Darrang Police stated that action is being initiated in accordance with the law, while further investigation into the matter is underway.

The seizure is part of the district police’s ongoing drive against the alleged illegal transportation of cattle. Darrang Police shared details of the operation through its official social media account on September 13.
