Assam Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ashok Singhal on Wednesday inaugurated a new three-bedded dialysis centre at Sapekhati Model Hospital in Charaideo district, marking a significant step towards strengthening kidney care services in the region.
Sharing the development on social media platform X, Singhal said the facility has been established to ensure easier access to quality dialysis treatment for patients, particularly those who earlier had to travel long distances to larger towns for care. The centre has been equipped with advanced haemodialysis machines and will offer dialysis services completely free of cost to patients, irrespective of their financial status.
The minister stated that the dialysis unit is being operated under the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, with the state government fully bearing the cost of each dialysis session. This includes expenses related to dialysis equipment, specialist nephrologists, MBBS doctors, trained technicians, and the supply of essential medicines.
Singhal informed that Assam currently provides free haemodialysis services through 403 machines functioning across 65 centres under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme. The addition of the Sapekhati dialysis centre is expected to benefit residents of the greater Sapekhati area by enabling timely and life-saving treatment closer to their homes.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, the minister said special focus has been given to strengthening healthcare infrastructure at Sapekhati Model Hospital, considering the area’s multi-ethnic and diverse population. He reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering equitable, people-centric public healthcare services across the state.
