Guwahati: As part of the nationwide Van Mahotsav 2026 celebrations, Gauhati University organised a series of tree plantation activities, including an afforestation drive along the Assam–Meghalaya border, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The week-long programme, observed from July 1 to 7, was conducted by the Gauhati University NSS Cell in collaboration with Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya under the theme “Let’s Make Hills Green.” The flagship plantation drive was held on July 5 at Dandoral in Sunapur, where NSS volunteers planted saplings to support efforts aimed at increasing green cover in the border region.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Secretary, University Classes, in the presence of Dr. Lakhimi Gogoi, NSS Programme Officer of Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya, and Dr. Sashi Prava Devi, NSS Programme Officer of the Gauhati University Campus Unit. Students and NSS volunteers took part in the plantation campaign, highlighting the role of youth in environmental conservation.

In a parallel initiative, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta planted a sapling at the Vice Chancellor’s office, symbolising the university’s support for sustainable environmental practices and its commitment to creating a greener campus.

According to Gauhati University, the observance of Van Mahotsav was aimed at encouraging greater public participation in tree plantation and strengthening awareness about the importance of protecting forests and preserving ecological balance. The university said such initiatives also seek to inspire students and local communities to contribute towards long-term environmental sustainability.

The plantation campaign formed part of Gauhati University’s broader efforts to promote environmental responsibility through community engagement and volunteer-led activities. The university reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that encourage ecological conservation and a greener future.
