At least 15 people sustained injuries after two vehicles carrying picnic-goers were involved in a head-on collision in Tripura’s Charilam area on Sunday, police officials said.
The accident occurred at Chechurimai under Charilam when a Max vehicle and a Swift car collided while returning to Sonamura from Khumlwung, where the group had gone for a picnic. The force of the impact caused severe damage to both vehicles, leaving several passengers trapped inside.
Following alerts from local residents, fire service personnel from Bishramganj and Bishalgarh rushed to the spot and conducted rescue operations to extricate the injured. All victims were initially taken to Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment. Hospital sources said that several injured persons, whose condition was assessed as serious, were later referred to the Trauma Centre at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital.
Police said the driver of the Max vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision. Family members of the injured alleged that the crash resulted from reckless driving and claimed it was not a mere accident.
Personnel from Bishramganj police station reached the site soon after the incident, managed the situation, and began collecting evidence. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver and ascertain the exact cause of the accident, officials added.
