Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on X highlighted major successes by state police in cracking down on drug trafficking across both the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, underlining what he described as a “same resolve” against narcotics, irrespective of region.
In a post on X, Sarma wrote: “Busted in Brahmaputra Valley, Busted in Barak Valley too! @chirangpolice recovered 30,000 YABA tablets worth ₹4.5cr; 2 arrested in Bijni. @cacharpolice recovered 85 cases of heroin (947 gms) worth ₹4.7 cr seized; 1 arrested. Different valleys -same resolve.”
The Chief Minister’s statement reflects Assam’s ongoing intensified drive against drug networks operating across the state, with coordinated operations by district police units leading to high-value seizures and arrests.
According to official sources, Chirang Police, operating in the Brahmaputra Valley, carried out a targeted operation in Bijni that resulted in the recovery of 30,000 YABA tablets. The seized narcotics are estimated to be worth approximately Rs 4.5 crore in the illicit market. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the seizure, and further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and possible cross-border links.
Simultaneously, Cachar Police in the Barak Valley achieved a significant breakthrough by seizing 85 cases of heroin weighing around 947 grams. The recovered heroin is valued at approximately Rs 4.7 crore. One person has been arrested in this case, and police officials said follow-up raids and interrogations are ongoing to identify other members of the network involved.
Senior police officials noted that these back-to-back seizures in two geographically and culturally distinct regions of Assam demonstrate the state’s unified and sustained approach against drug trafficking. “Whether it is the Brahmaputra Valley or the Barak Valley, the enforcement strategy remains the same—zero tolerance for narcotics,” an official said.
The Assam government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to making the state drug-free, with increased surveillance, intelligence-led operations, and coordination among district police units. Over the past few years, law enforcement agencies in Assam have stepped up checks along highways, border areas, and known transit routes used by traffickers.
Chief Minister Sarma’s post also serves as a message to criminal networks that the state’s anti-drug campaign spans all regions without discrimination. With multiple high-value seizures reported in recent months, the government has maintained that strict action will continue against those involved in the production, transportation, and distribution of narcotics.
Police officials said both cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the accused will be produced before the court. Further arrests are expected as investigations progress.
The twin busts, totaling seizures worth over Rs 9 crore, underline Assam’s sharpened enforcement against the drug menace and reinforce the administration’s claim of a consistent, valley-spanning resolve to curb narcotics trafficking in the state.
