Guwahati: Assam has witnessed a sustained and significant improvement in its law and order situation, with key crime indicators showing steady progress over the past five years, senior police officer Hardi Singh said on Saturday.
Chairing the Monthly Crime Conference at the Police Headquarters (PHQ), Singh reviewed the overall crime scenario in the state and highlighted that the positive momentum achieved in recent years has remained intact in early 2026 as well.
According to data presented at the conference, Assam’s crime rate has seen a sharp decline, dropping from 349.5 in 2020 to 121.5 in 2025, and further down to 101.9 in January 2026. The figures indicate a consistent reduction in criminal activities across the state, reflecting improved policing and focused crime-prevention strategies.
In another major achievement, pending criminal investigations have been reduced substantially. The number of pending cases has come down to 11,034 in 2026, marginally lower than 11,140 in 2025, and a dramatic fall from a staggering 1,54,280 pending investigations recorded in 2020. Officials said this reduction underscores improved efficiency in investigation processes and case monitoring.
The conference also reviewed progress in prosecution, with charge-sheet filing performance registering a notable improvement. The charge-sheet rate increased to 84.72 percent in 2026, up from 81.46 percent in 2025, and significantly higher than 47.80 percent in 2020. Police officials attributed this improvement to tighter supervision, better coordination with prosecution agencies, and increased accountability at the police station level.
Addressing the gathering, Hardi Singh said the Assam Police remained firmly committed to public service and institutional reforms. “In continuation of the gains of previous years, the 2026 data shows that the momentum is strong. We are marching ahead in the service of the people,” he stated.
Singh reaffirmed the department’s commitment to achieving a safer and more developed Assam, in line with the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. “We remain dedicated to marching towards a peaceful and developed Assam, as envisaged by Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma,” he added.
Senior police officers and district representatives attending the conference were directed to sustain the current pace, further reduce pendency, and ensure swift and transparent delivery of justice to the people of the state.
