Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday lauded the state police for foiling a drug trafficking attempt in Cachar district and seizing a substantial quantity of heroin. Sharing the development on X, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s firm stand against narcotics, stating, “Drugs in tow? Assam says NO!”

According to the Chief Minister’s post, the police recovered 55 soap cases containing 675 grams of heroin during the operation. One person has been detained in connection with the seizure, and further investigation is underway to identify links to larger drug trafficking networks.

“Kudos to @assampolice & @cacharpolice,” Sarma wrote, appreciating the coordinated effort that led to the successful interception. The seizure marks another significant breakthrough in Assam’s ongoing crackdown on drug smuggling, particularly along vulnerable routes used by traffickers to move contraband across districts and state borders.

Senior police officials said the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs, enabling the Cachar Police, with support from Assam Police units, to act swiftly and prevent the drugs from reaching the market. The seized heroin, packed in soap cases—a common method used by traffickers to conceal narcotics—was intended for illegal distribution, officials added.

The detained individual is being questioned, and police are probing possible forward and backward linkages to determine the source of the drugs and the intended destination. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The seizure underscores the Assam government’s sustained focus on combating drug trafficking and protecting youth from the menace of narcotics. In recent months, Assam Police have intensified surveillance, intelligence-based operations, and inter-district coordination to dismantle drug supply chains.

Chief Minister Sarma has repeatedly emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against drugs, stating that the fight against narcotics is critical for safeguarding public health and ensuring social stability. The latest haul in Cachar adds to a series of successful anti-drug operations carried out across the state, reinforcing Assam’s message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated.
