Silchar, March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday dedicated and laid the foundation stone for several major development projects worth over ₹23,000 crore in Assam’s Barak Valley during a high-profile programme in Silchar. The projects aim to strengthen connectivity, boost infrastructure, and enhance agricultural education across the region.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the occasion as a historic moment for the Barak Valley.
In his post, Sarma wrote that it is a “landmark day for Assam’s Barak Valley” as Prime Minister Modi visited Silchar to dedicate welfare works worth more than ₹23,000 crore to the people of the region.
The Prime Minister reached Silchar on Saturday morning after spending the night in Guwahati following a series of programmes on Friday.
Major Infrastructure Projects Announced
During the event, the Prime Minister performed the Bhoomi Poojan for the Shillong–Silchar Corridor, a massive infrastructure project worth around ₹22,860 crore. The corridor will become the first access-controlled greenfield high-speed expressway in Northeast India.
The expressway will significantly improve connectivity between Shillong and Silchar, reducing travel time and enhancing economic and tourism opportunities across Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya.
Officials said the corridor will play a key role in strengthening transportation links in the northeastern region, facilitating smoother movement of goods and passengers.
Boost to Agricultural Education
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a new College of Agriculture at Patharkandi in Karimganj district. The institution is expected to strengthen agricultural education, research, and innovation in the Barak Valley.
The new college will support local farmers with modern agricultural practices, research initiatives, and training programmes aimed at improving productivity and sustainability.
Launch of Asom Mala 3.0
Another major announcement during the programme was the Bhoomi Poojan for Asom Mala 3.0, a large-scale road infrastructure initiative valued at more than ₹3,200 crore.
Under this project, over 900 kilometres of roads will be constructed across Assam. The scheme is designed to improve inter-state connectivity and strengthen links between national highways and rural road networks.
The initiative is expected to boost regional trade, improve accessibility to remote areas, and accelerate overall economic growth in the state.
Part of Two-Day Visit to Assam
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Assam on Friday and attended multiple programmes in Guwahati. During the first day of his visit, he inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects worth approximately ₹24,250 crore.
The visit highlights the Centre’s continued focus on infrastructure development in the northeastern region, particularly in improving road connectivity, boosting agriculture, and expanding economic opportunities.
After concluding the Silchar programme, the Prime Minister is scheduled to depart for Kolkata later in the day.
State leaders have described the projects as a major step toward accelerating development in the Barak Valley and strengthening Assam’s infrastructure network.
