In a significant political development, Congress Member of Parliament Pradyut Bordoloi formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday in New Delhi. The induction took place in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia.
Bordoloi took the party oath during a formal ceremony attended by senior BJP leaders. Welcoming him into the party, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Bordoloi as an experienced parliamentarian and expressed confidence that his entry would further strengthen the BJP’s position in Assam.
Sarma also revealed that Bordoloi’s induction had received approval from the party’s national leadership a day earlier. He noted that the MP still has three years remaining in his current Lok Sabha tenure, making his move politically significant.
This development comes amid a series of setbacks for the Congress in Assam. Bordoloi’s switch marks the second major defection in less than a month, following the recent exit of former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, who also joined the BJP.
With Bordoloi’s departure, the Congress is now left with only two Lok Sabha MPs from Assam, intensifying concerns within the party as it prepares for upcoming elections in the state.
