Guwahati, March 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday officially filed his nomination as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Jalukbari Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026.
Sharing the moment on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma expressed gratitude and sought public support for the electoral journey ahead. He wrote that with the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and the people of Assam, he has filed his nomination and is seeking continued blessings for this crucial political journey.
Before submitting his nomination papers at the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Election Office, the Chief Minister led a grand procession through parts of the constituency. The rally witnessed enthusiastic participation from supporters and party workers, reflecting strong grassroots backing in the region.
Sarma was accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, son Nandil Biswa Sarma, and Gauhati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi during the nomination process.
A prominent political figure in Assam, Sarma has represented the Jalukbari constituency since 2001 and is now aiming for his sixth consecutive term as an MLA. He was initially elected as a Congress candidate and served three terms before switching to the BJP ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections. Since then, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening the party’s presence in the state.
The Assam Assembly Elections 2026 are expected to witness a direct contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led alliance. In the previous 2021 elections, the NDA secured a decisive victory, winning 75 out of 126 seats, with the BJP alone claiming 60 seats.
With over 2.2 crore registered voters and a high voter turnout of 86.2% recorded in 2021, the upcoming elections are anticipated to be closely watched. Polling is scheduled for April 9, while counting of votes will take place on May 4.
As the election campaign intensifies, Sarma’s nomination from Jalukbari once again positions him as a key contender in Assam’s political landscape.
