Guwahati, April 10: The Indian National Congress on Thursday filed a police complaint against its former Udalguri Assembly constituency candidate Suren Daimari, a day after he withdrew from the election race and resigned from the party.
The complaint was lodged at Bhangagarh Police Station by Ramanna Baruah, general secretary (organization) of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
According to the complaint, Daimari had applied for a party ticket from the No. 46 Udalguri Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC), which was approved by the party. He subsequently filed his nomination, which was accepted by the Election Commission. The Congress also transferred ₹30 lakh to his account via RTGS to support campaign-related expenses.
However, Baruah alleged that Daimari resigned from the party on April 8 and publicly declared through media that he would no longer contest the 2026 Assembly elections. He also reportedly made remarks describing the Congress as a “Gaddar party” and a “Probonchokor party,” which the party claims has damaged its public image.
The complaint states that Daimari’s actions attract provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Baruah has urged police to register a case under Sections 314, 316, 318, and 356, along with other relevant sections, and take appropriate legal action.
The incident has sparked fresh political controversy in the Udalguri constituency amid the ongoing Assam Assembly election process.
