Guwahati: For a group of academically promising school students from Assam, a visit to one of the country’s premier institutions became an opportunity to experience higher education beyond the classroom.

As part of the state government’s Aarohan 2026-27 programme, 233 students from Nalbari and Udalguri districts, accompanied by their mentors, are currently in Guwahati for an educational exposure visit. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu met the students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati and interacted with them over breakfast.

The visit is designed to encourage students to broaden their academic outlook through direct exposure to leading educational institutions. The Aarohan programme focuses on helping talented school students develop greater confidence, motivation and commitment towards their academic goals.

Pegu said the initiative was launched in the 2022-23 academic year under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with the objective of supporting the academic development of meritorious students from schools across the state.

The students from Nalbari and Udalguri are part of the first group to participate in the current year’s programme. Their educational tour is scheduled to conclude on August 12.

The scale of Aarohan is set to expand considerably during the 2026-27 programme. According to Pegu, a total of 4,041 students, accompanied by their mentors, will participate through 16 separate groups before the programme concludes on November 5.

The initiative is being implemented under the supervision of Samagra Shiksha Assam. Through educational tours, mentoring and exposure to institutions of national importance, the programme seeks to encourage students to pursue higher academic aspirations and explore opportunities available beyond their immediate surroundings.

The IIT Guwahati visit is expected to provide the participating students with an opportunity to gain a closer understanding of a premier institute and potentially inspire them to consider higher education and professional careers in fields such as science, technology and research.
